Mistletoe white: medicinal properties and contraindications

In nature, everything is interconnected: stronger creatures eat weaker ones. And this law is observed not only in animals, but also in the plant world. There are predators, victims, hosts and even parasites, able to exist at the expense of the more robust plant, sharing with it food and other functions. Such species of "sucking individuals" include mistletoe white, a semi-parasitic plant that is poisonous to the human body, but at the same time incredibly useful in the treatment of serious diseases such as cancer, tuberculosis, and epilepsy. But about everything in order.

Chemical composition

Mistletoe White

Before familiarizing yourself with all the advantages and disadvantages of this representative of the flora, it is worth paying attention to its chemical composition, which is responsible for the amazing ability of mistletoe to heal patients. Useful substances of the shrub:

  • mannitol;
  • vitamin E;
  • neuromoderators;
  • vitamin B4;
  • amatoxins;
  • gamma-aminobutyric acid;
  • triterpenoids;
  • eleutherosides;
  • alkaloids;
  • ursolic acid;
  • flavonoids;
  • histamines;
  • caffeic acid;
  • chlorogenic acid.

These components, of course, do not make the product suitable for consumption, but they give it the ability to treat and be useful in the healing of serious diseases of mankind.

How it looks and where it grows

In order to see mistletoe in its usual and natural form, it is necessary to go to Western European, Baltic, Central European countries, Belarus, North Caucasian possessions, in the forests and parks of Ukraine, as well as Asia. It is in this area that the "semi-parasitic" plant settles on linden, willow, poplar, birch, elm, maple or hawthorn trees. It is also found on oak, hornbeam, apple, pear, and plum trees. It lives in the branches, with its branched roots sprouting in the bark of the "host" tree.

Mistletoe white itself is a spherical shrub, "sticking" to the host plant. It belongs to the Mistletoe family. It is an evergreen plant with almost a meter long stems, colored green or green-brown. Its branches are bare and break into knotty knots that form a bush. The paired leaves are located at the ends of the branches. They are colored with a light green hue. The leaves are dense lanceolate or ellipse-like. They can be about 7 cm long. In autumn, after two years of its life, mistletoe sheds its leaves. It blooms with yellow-green, unremarkable, single-sex flowers. It bears white, translucent round berries that may be about 1 cm in diameter. Inside them there are one or two seeds, covered with a peel and located in the juicy, mucilaginous flesh of the fruit, which is very loved by some bird species, such as finches, thrushes, blackcapped warblers. And it is they who contribute to the spread of the plant. The fact is that birds eat berries, which quickly enough pass through the digestive tract of birds, and the seed in undamaged form "goes out" and finds a new host.

Often in the branches of park trees you can see the balls of the plant, the circumference of which is 1.2 m. Mistletoe blooms in the first two months of spring and white fruits appear in September.

Collection and storage

For medicinal purposes, the shoots and leaves of the plant are used, which should be harvested during the autumn or winter. From trees, and mistletoe grows quite high, it is removed with special hooks and secateurs, and then the necessary parts of the shrub are broken off.

The correct product should consist of small (up to 6 cm long) leaves and thin branches, no longer than 20 cm. The berries themselves are not included in the raw material. In a bittersweet-tasting collection can not be present any smell, and the number of small particles capable of passing through a three-inch sieve should not exceed 3% of the total mass, and the percentage of organic and mineral things - equal to 1. The ash content should not be more than 10%. Such a raw material is considered ideal. Getting it in the natural drying of plants in dry and well-ventilated rooms or under special sheds, where the mistletoe is spread out on parchment in a layer no thicker than 5 cm.

After drying the raw material is stored in bags, in places where there is no sunlight, where it is dry and there is ventilation. It is under these conditions, mistletoe is able to show its best qualities.
